Keith called me that week to congratulate me; Ellery had told him about my getting into Dartmouth. Keith just said his first name, as though I knew him, but it took me a moment to remember who he was. He told me he was coming down to Santa Fe for a couple of days, then going to visit his mother in New York. I was as polite as I could be, but it felt as though some Martian had touched earth in New Mexico and, thinking I was somebody important, was advising me of his plans to see the rest of the States.

I didn’t think about him again until he showed up at the prison.
